The programme includes 10 lesson plans across 5 modules, each with supporting resources. Each lesson builds on the last, guiding students from foundational emotional awareness to practical skills in self-regulation, empathy, and positive relationship-building.
OUTLINE OF EACH LESSON:
Lesson 1: What Are Emotions?
- An introduction to emotions using colours and simple labels.
- Students explore basic feelings, how they feel in the body, and learn to identify and name their emotions.
- Emphasis on understanding that all emotions are normal.
Lesson 2: When Emotions Change
- This lesson focuses on the fact that emotions are dynamic and can shift throughout the day.
- Students learn to notice changes in their feelings and reflect on triggers.
- Activities include movement games and reflection worksheets to visualise emotional changes.
Lesson 3: Why We Have Emotions
- Students explore the purpose of emotions as messengers that guide behaviour, protect us, and help us connect with others.
- Activities include discussion, stories telling, and a creative “emotion superpower” drawings.
Lesson 4: Calming Big Feelings (Self-Regulation Strategies)
- Students learn practical strategies for managing strong emotions, including breathing techniques, mindful movement, and calming exercises.
- Students practise self-regulation and understand that while feelings may be intense, they can control their responses.
Lesson 5: Taking Responsibility for Our Emotions
- Students learn that while feelings are natural, their actions are their own responsibility.
- Focus on differentiating between feelings and behaviour, and practising responsible responses through role-play and creative activities.
Lesson 6: Recognising Emotions in Others
- Focus on developing empathy and social awareness.
- Students learn to identify emotions in peers through facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and actions.
- Activities include role-play, partner observation work, and scenario discussions.
Lesson 7: Supporting Friends with Big Emotions
- This lesson teaches students how to support peers experiencing strong emotions safely and empathetically.
- Introduces the SAFE steps.
- Activities include role-play, discussion, and a creative activity “Kindness Hands.”
Lesson 8: Staying Safe When Others’ Emotions Get Dangerous
- Focuses on recognising when someone’s emotions may become unsafe.
- Students learn warning signs, safety strategies, and practise removing themselves from dangerous situations while still showing care.
Lesson 9: How to Be a Good Friend When Someone is Regulating Their Emotions
- Students learn how to support friends who are self-regulating, respecting their space and using appropriate, caring behaviours.
- Role-plays and a creative poster activities help reinforce supportive strategies and values like manaakitanga.
Lesson 10: Pulling It All Together (Celebration & Review)
- Final lesson consolidates all learning, celebrates individual and class achievements, and creates a Class Emotional Regulation Charter.
- Students reflect on personal growth, set goals, and participate in quizzes, creative activities, and a gratitude circle.
